An introvert’s guide to Northern Virginia

Want to be more social, but hate the idea of chatting up a stranger? Try these activities for introverts in NOVA.

A wall that's painted yellow and filled with shelves of board and card games from the floor to the ceiling.

You could spend weeks working through all of the games available for play at Crossroads.

Introverts like to enjoy their community, too.

Just because you’re energized by alone time doesn’t mean you don’t want to get out of the house. Whether you prefer quieter social events, feel drained by excess socialization, or just need a push to get out there, we’re here to help with a guide to local organizations and events well suited for introverts.

Silent socialization

Silent Book Club is an organization with chapters across the globe that offer no-pressure meetups — bring your own book and read alongside other individuals. Meetings often involve silent reading time and optional socialization afterwards.

  • Silent Book Club NOVA | This chapter of the club meets on the first Monday of each month at North Side Social.
  • Silent Book Club Alexandria | Join the Alexandria chapter, which meets in various locations around Alexandria or Kingstowne.
  • Silent Book Club Fairfax | The relatively new Fairfax chapter meets at Ornery Beer Co. and shares meeting dates on social media.

Laid back libations

Like the idea of grabbing a drink somewhere, but dislike the noise and hubbub? Try these spots:

  • Crossroads Tabletop Tavern | Grab a drink and peruse the stacks of games that are available to play — no conversation needed beyond a solid game strategy chat.
  • La Fromagerie Cheese and Wine Bistro | It’s not unusual to spot solo diners sipping wine and reading a book at this Old Town Alexandria wine shop.
  • Foundation Coffee Roasters | If you ever find yourself at Fair City Mall, duck inside this cafe to escape the shoppers. The space has ample seating to spread out and relax, making it a worthy stop for introverts whether you’re shopping or not.
  • Daniel O’Connell’s | This spot can get busy on weekends, but go at the right time on a Wednesday and you’ll be met with a cozy, fireplace-laden spot for drinks.

Let pets do the talking

If you have a furry friend, you have an instant conversation starter — and a simple way to bond with people over a shared interest.

  • NOVA Trail Dogs hiking group | Join this local Meetup group that’s passionate about safely hiking with dogs in the DC metro area.
  • Caboose Commons | Head to the Commons for Ruff Tuesdays, when dog owners bring their pups along to eat and drink — if you don’t feel like socializing with humans, just chat with Fido.
  • Paw Pals in the Park | Walk as much or little as you’d like with this group that meets up with their dogs around NOVA.

Clubs for true connection

Sometimes, introverts are just seeking deeper, more meaningful connections over fun activities. Try joining a group or getting involved in a way that interests you.

  • Run clubs | Running is a simple way to socialize without pressure. (Don’t wanna chat? You’re focusing on breathing correctly, duh.) Find the right fit for you at one of these 15+ NOVA run clubs.
  • Volunteer | Find a cause that you’re passionate about and meet other like-minded individuals as you lend a helping hand.
  • Del Ray urban sketchers | Join this drop-in sketching group that usually meets on the second Sunday of each month — you’ll spend time sketching alone, then reconvene to review the finished works.
