A new community art space is on the horizon in Arlington County.
Right near Four Mile River, at 2700 S. Nelson St. and 2701 S. Oakland St., the 2700 Art Space Project is meant to be an area that locals can use day-to-day or for specific events, and the expected opening date is just a couple of months away.
The Studios at Arlington Arts is nearby, and this upcoming space is perfect for locals who wish to engage with local arts. The project includes a zone for temporary public art, a spot for those to create art, and a more open area for events.
“What I think is unique about this idea is that this is a temporary outdoor, modular space for the arts,” Josh Stoltzfus said. He’s the Acting Director for the Cultural Affairs Division for Arlington County, also known as Arlington Arts.
The land was purchased by the county about five years ago because the board saw potential in the area to support the arts that already exist in the Four Mile Run Valley.
One of the key components of this space will be a market called SPARK!, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month from May through November. If you’re interested in being a vendor, applications are due Monday, March 9.
“The best way to describe this is not your usual art market,” Stoltzfus said. Along with the sale of products from local artists, there will also be opportunities to create art with the artists, and there’s potential for performance activities.
The expected opening date of the 2700 Art Space Project will kick off with the first SPARK! event, expected to take place on Sunday, May 3.
Bonus: The day before, Saturday, May 2, The Studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for their Spring Show and Sale. Admission to this event is free.
