Caroline Street in Fredericksburg was just named the Best Main Street in the South by Garden & Gun. While there’s a lot to do now on this popular thoroughfare, let’s dive into the history of this beloved part of NOVA.
One of Caroline Street’s well-known historical sites is the Rising Sun Tavern. Originally a tavern, it was built by George Washington’s younger brother, Charles Washington. It’s now owned and operated by the Washington Heritage Museums.
Another famous historic site includes the Fielding Lewis Store. The store was built by John Lewis to be a general store, and now serves as the office building for the Historic Frederickburg Foundation.
And make sure to check out Goolrick’s Modern Pharmacy, which was established in 1897. Their soda fountain, which is said to be one of the United States’ oldest in operation, opened in 1912. It’s currently closed for renovations, but is expected to reopen this year.
If you’re drawn to the energy of this popular main street, this 1893-built property offers an opportunity to live just steps away. If you don’t want to buy, you can stay at the 1890 Caroline House to check out the area.
