Where to go for your next movie night

Nothing calls for getting comfy at a movie theater like frigid temperatures. With winter in full swing, check out these four local theaters in Northern Virginia — showing both new hits and classics you love.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema | Loudoun + Woodbridge
With two locations in the Northern Virginia area, you can see the newest releases you’ve been dying to check out. Or, if you’re like me, you can elect to catch a classic on the big screen. I would get tickets for “When Harry Met Sally…” on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Angelika Film Center & Cafe | Fairfax
Located in the heart of the Mosaic District, this theater showcases both new and old films. They also offer a fun series called “Top Secret Cinema” for the true cinephiles — prior to the screening, the only information available is the runtime and the rating.

Staying warm without watching your energy bills climb? Yes, please. | Photo provided by Dominion Energy
Winter is settling in — and so is the urge to crank the heat.

Keep your home cozy and efficient with these helpful winter energy saving tips from Dominion Energy:
  1. Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or switch to a smart thermostat for automatic savings.
  2. Change furnace and HVAC filters regularly to keep air moving freely and prevent breakdowns. Plus, clear space around your vents and furnace so your system can breathe.
  3. Seal air leaks around doors, windows, and attic entryways to keep warm air where it belongs.
  4. Lower your water heater to 120-125 degrees and wrap the tank with an insulation blanket.
  5. Switch to LED lights for festive, energy-efficient decorating that lasts longer.
And that’s not all. Looking for more ways to save? Take a look at Dominion Energy’s new energy savings finder.

Alexandria released its new Green Building Plan to further improve the standards for new developments in the area. See how this plan will impact you. The proposal will be presented to the Planning Commission on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and then to the City Council on Saturday, Jan. 24. (ALXnow)

The City of Arlington is seeking input for another week on the project to improve three parks: Maury Park, Herselle Milliken Park, and Gum Ball Park. You have until Sunday, Dec. 21 to share your feedback.

State

Dominion Energy’s Charitable Foundation awarded $3.5 million to nonprofit organizations throughout the United States, with about $2.3 million going to 208 nonprofits in Virginia, including The Capital Area Food Bank’s Community Marketplaces in NOVA. Want assistance for your non-profit? Applications are being accepted for the next round from Monday, Jan. 12 to Friday, Feb. 20.

Development

New nature trail, restored rail line, or both? This pending decision sparked conversation last week when the Virginia Department of Transportation proposed a double-header development in the Shenandoah Valley: a new 50-mile trail + the restoration of the Manassas Gap rail line. How much would each cost? (Virginia Mercury)

Seasonal

Many Arlington residents submitted quippy names for the fleet of snowplows that clean up the area. Take a look at the selected names. My favorites are Chilly Nelson, Snowbrina Carpenter, and Kendrift Lamar — a very music-based trio. (ARLnow)

The other day, I ran past Arlington National Cemetery and saw the wreaths laid on veterans’ headstones in observance of National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 13. The wreaths will remain in place until Saturday, Jan. 10, when volunteers are invited to help remove them and once again honor those who have served our country.
