News Notes

Open

After sitting vacant for 16 years, the space at 3000 Duke St. in Alexandria finally has a new tenant — Umiya Sushi, which opened on Friday, Aug. 8. This all-you-can-eat sushi spot is also serving seafood and other grilled dishes. (ALXnow)

Coming Soon

A new sushi speakeasy is coming to Arlington’s Court House neighborhood. Saki, located at 2055 15th Street N., has begun construction and is aiming for a winter debut. While the menu hasn’t been finalized, the owners plan to serve other Japanese dishes outside of sushi. (ARLnow)

Arts

You’re made for the screen, darling. Local film productions are now casting across Northern Virginia, including Alexandria, Arlington, Lorton, and Manassas. From short films to features, it’s a great time to get involved. (ALXnow)

Mansion Monday

This modern McLean home deserves a mic drop for causing our jaws to drop. Completed in 2025, this newly built mansion features seven spacious bedrooms and eight and a half luxurious bathrooms, set on a beautifully landscaped one-acre lot. You already know we’re loving all of the natural light.

On This Day

Today marks 159 years since the first public roller skating rink opened to the US public back in 1866. Thankfully, NOVA has a lot more options to keep the kiddos entertained these days. (WUN)

Stat

Are Gen Z cereal killers? Sales of the boxed breakfast have fallen by 13% in the US compared to 2021 — a decline attributed to changing preferences in young Americans. But who can blame them when they have local brunch options like this? (New York Post)
“Hot Girl Summer” ruled in 2019. “Brat” summer took over in 2024. Now, this summer has been dubbed “brain rot summer” — a season with no viral anthem, no clear vibe, and scattered cultural chatter. If that makes you want to unplug entirely, touch grass at a local trail. (Business Insider)

VCs back startups for outsized returns. Regular people wait. But rule changes fixed that.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 people averaged a $2,370 stake. Today? That’s worth $1 million+, up 89,900%. No wonder 10,000+ people and the same VCs behind Uber and Venmo are taking the chance on Pacaso.

Founded by a former Zillow exec, they’ve earned $110 million+ in gross profit to date. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO. Invest for $2.90/share.‡‡

The Wrap

🪩 I recently learned a new term the other day, and I absolutely love it. Have you ever heard of a “disco nap”? The premise is that this little nap is taken in the late afternoon or early evening to rejuvenate you for a night out. The earliest known use dates back to the 1990s, but there are traces of the term that can be found as far back as the 1970s.

We recommend taking a disco nap before one of the many events happening in NOVA this month.
