What is composting?
Composting is the process of decomposing organic matter, like leaves and food scraps, into a fertilizer. You get a nutrient-rich soil that you can use for all your plant needs.
How to compost in NOVA
Alexandria has officially launched its compost program after a successful two-year pilot. How exactly will this work? And how can you compost in other cities in NOVA? Let’s break it down for you.
Alexandria
You can now take part in Alexandria’s curbside composting program. If you already get regular trash and recycling pick-up, you just need to pay an additional fee to get your compost collected. You can choose to pay a $5 monthly fee or a $55 yearly fee.
Arlington
If you live in Arlington, there are currently 14 bins located around the city. The city is looking to add 10 more to increase accessibility. To access these bins, you need to download the Bigbelly Smart Compost app.

All fares on Metro will be free from 5 p.m. until close on Independence Day. Metro is also ramping up services in the afternoon to rush hour levels to help folks get to their destination.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is seeking approval for a $460 million bond referendum to be added to the Nov. 4 ballot. If approved, this money would fund the adopted capital improvement program for 2026-2030. (FFXnow)

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is relocating its headquarters from the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building in Washington, DC, to Alexandria. The new headquarters will be housed in the former National Science Foundation building.

After looking at 850 counties in the US, SmartAsset ranked Fairfax County the best in the US for new families. Aspects, including proximity to parks and primary care doctors, were examined along with overall affordability.
Biz
After closing in 1998, the chain Five Guys has returned to its original location in Columbia Pike. In 1986, Westmont Shopping Center was home to the first location of this beloved chain, which is headquartered in Alexandria. (ARLnow)

Livewell Animal Hospital and SEV Laser are coming to Falls Church. The veterinary clinic and hair removal studio will be located on the ground floor of Modera Falls Church Apartments, located at 1033 W. Broad St. (ARLnow)
Community
Alexandria will host a design information meeting on Thursday, July 10, to discuss their solution to prevent flooding in the Westover neighborhood. The project would be a 2.5-year sewer separation project. The meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center. (ALXnow)
