As winter break creeps closer, maybe you’re on the hunt for an activity that occupies the whole family. Museums are the perfect warm option for a cold winter day. Ready to explore? Start planning with one of these Northern Virginia museums.

Steven F. Udvar‑Hazy Center, 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy, Chantilly | Free, $15 parking
Part of the National Air and Space Museum with the Smithsonian, you can explore over 3,000 different objects, including 200+ aircraft and spacecraft. This museum also hosts a variety of events you can check out.

Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, 11200 Fairfax Station Rd., Fairfax Station | $3-$5
This is for all of the train lovers out there. Learn more about the history of railroads in Northern Virginia and how it has impacted the development of what we now know as NOVA.

Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden, 614 Oronoco St., Alexandria | $10
Built in 1785, this historic estate has been home to several notable figures, including members of the Lee family and Union soldiers, as well as the enslaved and free people of African descent who worked there. Recognized for its historical significance, the property is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Morven Park Historic House & Garden, 17339 Southern Planter Ln., Leesburg | $5-$10
The site is home to Morven Park International Equestrian Center, the Davis Mansion, and the Morven Park Center for Civic Impact. Many enslaved people worked on this property, and the site now operates the 246 Years Project to remember these men, women, and children.

Museums of Contemporary Art Arlington, 3550 Wilson Blvd., Arlington | Free
With nine different gallery spaces featuring art from local, national, and international artists, there is plenty to see at these ever-changing collections. Check out the current exhibits here.

National Sporting Library & Museum, 102 The Plains Rd., Middleburg | $8-$10
This museum was founded in 1954 by four sportsmen to preserve the culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. The collection now has over 1,300 different paintings, sculptures, and other objects.

Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site, 4301 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria | Free
Want to learn more about Civil War topics? This is the spot for you. Immerse yourself in various interpretive programs and tours to explore this storied site.

Arlington Historical Museum, 1805 S. Arlington Ridge Rd., Arlington | Free
Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., this history-buff haven covers all things, yeah, you guessed it, Arlington, Virginia. Bonus: You can also see a historic schoolroom that was built in 1891.
