News Notes

Mansion Monday

You have to see this stunning home in Annandale — it looks like it came straight out of Architectural Digest. We’re absolutely in love with the dining room, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed brick walls.

Sports

A brand-new pickleball venue is on the way. Five courts are being added to Greenbriar Park, and a new skate park is coming to Mount Vernon Woods Park. Construction is set to begin at the end of August and September, respectively. (FFXnow)

Closing

My jaw dropped when I read this headline. One of my favorite spots to get ice cream, Nicecream, is closing Saturday, Aug. 30 after 11 years. However, you can still satisfy your sweet tooth with its catering + delivery service. (ARLnow)

Edu

Northern Virginia may soon have its first medical school. Mary Washington Healthcare plans to partner with the University of Mary Washington to establish the new institution, potentially by 2029. (Northern Virginia Magazine)

Stat

54%. That’s the percentage of Americans who say they consume alcohol — the lowest number recorded since tracking began in 1939. If you’re part of the 46% taking a break from booze (but still want a delicious drink), we recommend the Blackberry Jalapeno Mockarita at Makers Union in Arlington.

Holiday

This could be your cue to plan a Labor Day getaway. The average cost of domestic round trip flights is 6% lower this year than it was last Labor Day weekend, averaging $720. If you want to stay close, check out these rentals in and around NOVA. (AAA)

Kids

Calling all Liams — it’s your time to shine. This name ranked as Virginia’s most popular for babies born last year, with names James, Charlotte, Noah, and Olivia rounding out the top five. No matter the name of the little munchkin — or munchkins — in your life, good thing NOVA is chock full of kid-friendly activities.

Pets

Forget Whiskers and Mittens — Bella is the most popular cat name in Virginia, according to a new study. Have a better moniker in mind for a feline friend? Meet adoptable cats at the Humane Society of Fairfax County who still need a name — and a home. (Newsweek)

Travel

Psst — you might be overpaying for flights. Get flight alerts to dream destinations during Going’s biggest sale ever, with 53% off memberships until Sunday, August 31.*
