A new era for the Washington Commanders

Big news for Commanders fans — a deal has been reached between the team and Washington, DC, to build a new stadium where the RFK Stadium is located. The team played at RFK Stadium from 1961 to 1996 before moving to their current home, Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Here’s what you should know, by the numbers:

180 — The number of acres the new stadium site will be. Located right on Kingman Lake, this has been a desired spot for the Commanders for quite some time.

65,000 — The number of seats that will be in the new stadium.

2.7 billion — The amount the Commanders will pay to help build the stadium.

500 million — The amount DC will pay for other projects on the site. $1.147 billion will come from public funds, including EventsDC.

20-30 — The number of major events they hope to host every year.

6,000 — The number of housing units that will be built on this land, according to Mayor Muriel Bowser and the NFL.

2030 — Fall 2030 is the target opening for the new stadium. They hope to break ground on the stadium in 2026.

5 — The number of Super Bowls the Commanders played in during their time at RFK Stadium, winning three championships in that era.

The Wrap

From our Editor

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, and NOVA has plenty of events for the occasion. I’m most drawn to Virginia’s Gold Cup Races — our very own horse races in VA.
