Back with another neighborhood guide — this time, we’re exploring the vibrant Mosaic District in Fairfax. Tucked just off Lee Highway, it’s easy to miss at first glance, but step inside and you’ll find a hub filled with shops and restaurants.

What’s at the farmers market?

I headed to this popular NOVA spot on Sunday so I could also check out the farmers market, and it did not disappoint. Upon arrival, I noticed a line forming at an empanada stand — DMV Empanada. All I could think was, “This must be good.” I hopped in line with my friend, and we got three different empanadas:

  • The bacon, egg, and cheese
  • The chicken pesto
  • The spinach and cheese

The line in question? Well worth the wait, as these were incredibly tasty.

Where to grab coffee?

We continued our stroll and stopped for a pick-me-up at a charming little coffee shop called Mom + Pop. I went with a classic cold brew, while my friend chose a matcha.

Now, feeling full and caffeinated, we continued our stroll to other stands, overflowing with beautiful produce, pastries, and other local goodies. I still regret not getting a couple of these peaches.

Where to shop + eat locally

Outside of the market, there’s a ton to do in the Mosaic District. We wandered through some popular favorites like Madewell, Anthropologie, Paper Source, and Warby Parker, and also explored a few local gems — including Scout + Molly’s Boutique. Here’s a full list of the shops in the area.

There are also plenty of places to dine, from popular chains like Sweetgreen to fan favorite local spots like B Side to beloved local chains like Pupatella.

What to do around town

The last spot I wanted to mention is the movie theatre. Sadly, I didn’t have time to catch a flick, but this spot in the heart of the Mosaic District makes for a perfect date night. The Angelika Film Center showcases the new movies you’re dying to see, along with other events like album release parties.

Thanks for strolling with me. Where would you stop in the Mosaic District?
