One of the most important ways to become an engaged member of your community is by knowing how your local government works. We’re breaking down everything you need to know about Fairfax’s government and how Fairfaxians can get involved.
Fairfax operates under a Council-Manager form of government, where a City Council of six individuals — plus a Mayor — are elected to two-year terms. All of these officials are elected on an at-large, non-partisan basis. Catherine Read has served as Mayor since 2022. Did you know? Fairfax did not become an independent city of Virginia until 1961 — up until then, it was considered an incorporated town within Fairfax County.
Fairfax’s City Council is considered the governing body of the city + is responsible for tasks such as making policy and approving the city budget
The City Council is also responsible for appointing a City Manager, who serves as the city’s chief administrator. Bryan Foster is serving as the Acting City Manager until further notice.
How to participate
Those wanting to run for City Council in Fairfax must meet three main requirements:
- Must be eligible to vote for City Council
- Must have been a resident of Virginia for at least one year prior to running
- Must have been a resident of Fairfax for at least one year prior to running
Not interested in running for office? Fairfaxians can get involved in other ways, such as volunteering to serve for a term on a city board or commission. City boards + commissions hear requests and appeals for topics such as building code and zoning, or provide input to the City Council on specific topics ranging from environmental sustainability to parks and recreation improvements.
